Link Directory : is Useful

I am a webmaster, searching for web traffic. But not getting a good traffic tool or something other. I have come across with web directory or link directory many times. But how it can be useful to gaining the traffic. I have no idea about. In my opinion a web directory is hub of links of website address. These links are submitted by the webmaster only. If I submit my link to directory, i am not going to see others because my need to gain traffic not to surf the directory for services. So all links are farce for my in that particular directory. May, be my opinion is not broad minded, due to some lack of knowledge, I welcome the suggestion to make it clear if directories are useful any way..... But I think most people are not going to submit there website or blog links to these directories even for free,
I have my own dir.needcom.in But lacking of links, not coming no one to submit, even it is free to submit links to.....
